Franco Smith, a former Springbok fly-half and Erasmus' colleague from their playing days, is a strong candidate. Smith has a proven track record as an attack coach and has worked with the Springboks before. However, his return would depend on his personal ambitions and whether he is willing to lead the attack with the prospect of possibly filling Erasmus' void after the 2031 World Cup. Another intriguing possibility is Mike Catt, a Rugby World Cup winner in 2003 and a world-class attack coach with extensive international experience. Catt's South African roots and his recent departure from the NSW Waratahs make him an attractive prospect for SA Rugby. However, the team has historically been reluctant to hire local coaches, and it remains to be seen whether they will break this trend.
